MURRAY, Utah — A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on Interstate 15 in Murray on Saturday, according to the Utah Department of Public Safety.

At approximately 4:30 a.m., on Saturday, August 22, 2020, a white SUV was traveling southbound on Interstate 15 at the top of the 4500 South off ramp when it struck a pedestrian and continued driving.

According to DPS, a citizen followed the SUV and called 911 — reporting to 911 dispatchers that the driver was driving recklessly.

The Murray Police Department located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Meanwhile, other officers responded to the 4500 South off ramp where they discovered a deceased person.

DPS identified the deceased pedestrian as 43-year-old Preston Scott Smith.

"Utah Highway Patrol is handling the investigation," read a statement from the Utah Department of Public Safety. "The driver is being investigated for impairment. It is unknown why the pedestrian was on the interstate."

The deceased was identified as Preston Scott Smith, 43 years of age.
